Information regarding the educational streams NSC / DSD II and NSC / Deutsche Internationale Abitur from 2007

The Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg has restructured the senior level (grades 10-12) after successful negotiations between the governments of the Republic of South Africa and the Federal Republic of Germany. The school thereby follows the world-wide trend to reduce school time at comparable academic levels. As regards the restructuring this entails that the senior level will be organised into two separate educational streams.

After completing grade 9, DSJ learners can decide what type of schooling they prefer. In educational stream 1, after 12 years of schooling, they can obtain the secondary school-leaving certificate of the Republic of South Africa (NSC = National Senior Certificate) and the DSD II (German Language Diploma II). The tuition and the exams are largely through the medium of English.

In the second educational stream, which is a combined bilingual one and of the same duration as the first stream, DSJ learners can obtain both the NSC and the Abitur. This educational stream enables learners to obtain both countries’ highest possible school-leaving certificates with university endorsement. The media of instruction and the exams will be English and German in accordance with their bilingual character.
